Hello World!

Hello.

I’m MissKay.  I decided to start this blog for a few reasons. The biggest one is to use it as a source of cathartic release for myself. There are a lot of really big things going on in my life and I just wanted a place to work through my emotions. You are welcome to follow my journey and ask questions along the way, if you so wish.

Here’s what you should know: I’m a 20-something American Born Desi. You may be wondering what a “desi” is. Well…”desi” refers to a person of South Asian descent (mainly from Pakistan, India or Bangladesh). My parents immigrated to America after they were married; and my siblings and I were all born and raised in America. Growing up, I did not speak English at home and I wore traditional clothing, unless I was going to school. I love both of the cultures I was raised in, and I have found ways to combine the two in ways that surprise even myself sometimes. This comes with some problems, of course. My parents don’t always understand my point of view, and I end up hiding a lot of my life from them. Over the coming weeks, I’ll delve more into this because its one of the main reasons I decided to write this blog.

But for now, I’m going to celebrate myself and all of the things I’ve accomplished so far. This week is a really big week for me. I’m graduating with my Master’s Degree, leaving my first full-time job and starting my first job in a leadership role. It hasn’t been an easy road by any means, but I can’t help but feel pride in myself for making it happen. For the past two years, I have been working full time, while going to graduate school at night and commuting nearly 4 hours a day. Life hasn’t been easy, but my journey so far has led me to to learn so much about myself and what I’m capable of. I’m both excited and nervous for what the future holds and I can’t wait to share my journey with all of you.

I’ve never shared so much of myself or my writing with others, so bear with me as I learn how to navigate the blog world and  welcome to the Diaries of an American Born Desi aka DABDesi..I hope that as I learn and grow from this experience, you are able to as well. And if not, I hope you at least enjoy what you read. 🙂

Always,

MissKay
